My American Heart

This interview was done with Steven, MAH’s drummer, in Camden, NJ at Warped Tour 2007

1. Your heading right back on tour after Warped ends. Are you more excited or nervous about this quick transition?
I am actually…I don’t know. I’m not really excited or nervous. It’s like more just work. It’s like, okay we’re going to do this huge fucking summer tour and I get one day off to go wash my clothes at home and now I’m going to go out on this other tour. So I’m not more nervous, I guess just like [I have to] prepare myself. I’m excited, kinda.

2. Last year you played some shows with Paramore at very small venues and now they’re playing main stage here at Warped. What’s it like seeing bands you’ve toured with break out?
It’s great, dude. Like us and Paramore have been friends for a long time and I’ve always known they were going to blow up. They have it, you know? They’ve always been tight, ever since the beginning. They never whined or bitched about anything. I mean they used to have their dad on tour but they’re a little bit older now. I think it’s rad. So hopefully they’ll help us out one day and we’ll go out on another tour and do it again. I’m proud of them as friends and musicians.

3. Your new album contains a much wider variety of sound compared to your last album. What inspired you to mix things up?
Just life. Cause life is just a big, constant of changes, you know? Everything’s changing, we’re changing. We’re not going to play the same music forever. We don’t listen to the same music all the time. So just life in general made the record, made our sounds sound different.

4. Some fans were upset about your change in sound for the new album. What’s your reaction to all of it?
We’re not going to be screamo forever. Screaming’s overrated. We don’t care. We want to be true to ourselves. We don’t want to do what you want to hear. But if you like it, that’s fucking awesome because that shows you’re changing as well and you’re not listening to the same old shit.

5. What’s it like being on Warped for the entire tour?
It’s awesome. It’s cool. It’s really, really hard but on the other hand it’s really like profitable. It’s a great tour to like gain more exposure over the summer. And it’s great. We’ve done it two years in a row. And doing the whole thing is just, it’s awesome. It’s cool.

6. What’s one of the craziest experiences you have had with a fan?
With a fan? Oh God. Ummm, oh this one time, these girls brought us like two dozen cupcakes. And um they tasted like shit. And being the guy that I am, I’m really truthful, I ate one of them and was like “Wow, this taste like shit.” And she got really mad at me. I think I lost a fan. So, she’s not a fan anymore but they did taste like shit.

7. What has been one of your best show experiences? One of your worst?
The best show I played was probably at Chain Reaction in California. It’s just rad. That whole scene that comes to our shows, they’re really supportive. I’ve never seen a whole room actually participating with our band, you know? And the worst show probably would be the show in Dallas, Texas recently because we got a bunch of our equipment stolen. Stolen equipment’s not cool.

8. If you could be any rock legend, who would you be?
John Bonham. Hands down.

9. What do you like to do when you’re not on tour?
When I’m not on tour, I like to skateboard, play video games, and… skateboard and play video games.
