Four Year Strong Interview
This interview was done with Josh Lyford and Joe Weiss at Warped Tour in Camden, NJ on July 25th, 2008.
1. What inspired you to offer your album for free for a limited time?
Josh: Pretty much like just trying to get it out there so as many kids would come to shows as possible.
Joe: Pretty much just more promotion than trying to make money off the album. Just trying to have some people who haven’t heard of us to maybe check it out.
2. What was your favorite part of making your new music video?
Josh: Having it be finished. I don’t know. It was pretty intense. Acting. Well basically acting like a maniac. With like people’s parents and friends and like your neighbors.
Joe: It was definitely pretty awkward.
Josh: It was cool. It was a lot of fun. It was fun watching like everybody else. But when you were doing it yourself it was a little nuts.
3. Your music tends to be very energetic, how does this reflect you as people?
Josh: I think maybe if we ate a lot of sugar or something. We’re old. We’re like sloths now.
Joe: I suppose it reflects poorly. We just sit around and do nothing and watch TV all the time.
Josh: Have you ever seen like an old dog laying on the couch? That’s more like us.
4. Do you feel like signing with Decaydance Records has helped you so far?
Josh: They definitely like promote us well. They put our name out there. It’s definitely a good opportunity to have random kids get down.
Joe: It’s more promotion I guess. So, just trying to get the name out there.
5. I know you guys formed your name through the bond you made in high school, was the high school experience as positive as your friendship?
Joe: It actually didn’t even involve the two of us. We didn’t go to high school with everyone else. We both went to different high schools.
Me: Really? What was the high school experience for you then?
Josh: I’ll be one of the few people in life who like won’t even complain. I had a good time in high school.
Joe: Yea, I went to an all guy’s Catholic high school. So I had to shower with a bunch of dudes all the time. That was something else.
6. What do you think has inspired the growth in your music that provided a change between your first EP and your latest album?
Josh: People say that a lot but I think the only difference is it wasn’t mixed as well. People always give me a hard time that there’s not as much keyboards on the new CD. It’s not that there’s not as much, it’s just mixed better.
7. What are your thoughts on the fact that your music tends to attract more guys than girls to your shows?
Josh: We like babes. We hope that more babes will come to shows.
Joe: Um, yea. I don’t know. It’s chill I guess. Whatever.
Josh: Little by little we’ve noticed more and more ladies… cruising over.
TMI
1. Is it difficult to maintain your beards?
Joe: No, honestly.
Josh: What, no it’s not?
Joe: To maintain beards is great. I pretty much just grow it then shave it off then grow it back.
Josh: The other day I shaved my neck off.
Joe: You shaved your neck off?
Josh: I shaved my neck off.
Joe: Sexual
2. If you were allowed one trip through time would you go to the past or the future and why?
Josh: The future’s fucking terrifying so not the future.
Joe: Definitely the past.
Josh: Wait, dude, where would you go? I want to know. I want to know where you’d go.
Joe: I don’t know. That’s a tough one. How about yourself, Josh?
Josh: You know, I’d like to say something cool like the medieval times but I’d be eaten alive by like the wolves of society. So, I like now. Now is good. Maybe a couple years ago. Go back a couple years and just like tell my old self to stop being a jackass and like live a little.
3. Have you ever eaten so much you threw up?
Josh: Yes.
Joe: Yea, probably. I don’t know.
Josh: Actually, like two tours ago I ate something fucked up and like shit and vomited at the same time.
4. Do you guys ever play pranks on each other or with other bands? If so, what’s the best that you pulled and the worst that you received?
Josh: You know, were sort of accidental pranksters. But it’s more just like meanness. Like we’ll be mean to each other.
Joe: We’ve never had anything really bad happen to us. Like once in the pouring rain we had like boxes and boxes of saran wrap around our van and trailer and because it was wet was literally impossible to get off.
Josh: There was A Day to Remember That One Time.
Joe: Oh yea, we threw a burrito at them one time when they were chasing us.
Josh: They literally like lost control of the wheel.
5. What’s a tour story you never get tired of telling?
Josh: Depends on who I’m telling it to. I tell my mom just how much I enjoy touring.
Me: What about to your fans or just like friends?
Joe: I don’t know.
Josh: I need like notes of life.
(random banter about how they shouldn’t tell a story)
Josh: I don’t know about that. I think we might have to pass on that question.
6. Who is your favorite bearded man in history?
Josh: That’s a good question. Uh, I think any bearded man in history is alright. Unless it’s like a rapist.
Joe: Um, I don’t know. I guess that’s it.
(Random banter then Alex of All Time Low interrupts)
Alex: Four Year Strong used to be a group of lumberjacks who were all fired at the same time.
(Random banter about lumberjack shirts)
